Soma

SOMA is a non-formal theological training program that is built upon a philosophy of cohort learning and Socratic discussion. This 4-year non-formal theological training program is made to meet the unique context of the African pastors.

SOMA is a non-formal theological training program that seeks to equip pastors with essential knowledge and skills for faithful ministry. Built upon a philosophy of cohort learning and Socratic discussion, SOMA provides a unique educational experience for African pastors. Our program is designed to address the scarcity of resources, cost constraints, and English illiteracy prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa, making theological training accessible to those who have limited opportunities for formal education.

At Ekklesia Afrika, we have carefully crafted a four-year curriculum that covers key areas of study crucial for effective ministry. These areas include:

  • Ecclesiology: Exploring the biblical foundations and principles of the Church, its role in society, and the practical aspects of leading and shepherding a congregation.
  • Biblical and Systematic Theology: Engaging with the Scriptures and understanding the essential doctrines and theological frameworks that underpin our faith.
  • Pastoral Theology: Equipping pastors with the skills, wisdom, and discernment necessary to shepherd and care for the spiritual well-being of their congregations.
  • Word-based Ministry: Fostering a deep appreciation for the Word of God and equipping pastors to preach, teach, and apply its transformative truths to the lives of their congregants.
  • Missions: Understanding the biblical mandate for global missions and developing a missional mindset to engage with the world, sharing the love and truth of Christ.

Our mode of study centers around cohort learning and Socratic discussions. Each month, pastors receive a purposefully selected book relevant to the unit they will be studying, along with a study guide and a report-writing guide. These resources facilitate individual study and preparation for the monthly cohort discussion in their local area.

Cohorts, consisting of 6-12 pastors, gather regularly in local regions which enables pastors to remain close to their homes and churches while engaging in in-depth theological studies. Cohort sessions are facilitated by a cohort leader who guides the discussions and encourages the practical application of Scripture

We believe in the value that the SOMA program carries and its impact on the lives of pastors in Sub-Saharan Africa. To help us offer this education effectively to our network of pastors, we need your support. We invite you to be a part of this mission by contributing to our “Adopt a Pastor” initiative. It costs us about 50 to 70 USD a month to effectively serve a single pastor. Your financial support can help more pastors access this program. Kindly consider adopting a pastor. By doing so, you play a vital role in equipping faithful shepherds and leaders in their communities.

….but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Many of the professors are not just scholars, they are also pastors.
It feels like these are shepherds who are teaching you and training you.
